The author was born in Alexandroupolis, Northern Greece, in 1929, where his father, a philologist, was a high school principal. His family mostly of orthodox priests and school teachers since the 17th century, is of Northern Epirus origin. While he was an infant the family moved to Athens, and at the age of 20 he entered, following stringent examinations the Technical Univeristy of Athens (Å.Ì.Ð.), faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, being among a group of only 33. In his private life, he is dedicated to the love of the sea, so familiar to the Hellenes, ever since early antiquity. He attained his first sailing yacht in 1968, a 28ft sloop of Victoria Dutch class, with which he cruised and raced extensively in the Aegean sea. In 1980 he replaced her with a Hallberg – Rassy 38ft Swedish sloop, which he kept until 2001.
Member of the Hellenic Offshore Racing club since 1969 and at times member of the Board, his interests lie focused on the extant volumes of the Ancient Greek Authors, aiming to uncover the extensive knowledge the age old Greeks possessed as far as Astronomy, Navigation and Sea Eplorations are concerned.
